Ayurveda Encyclopedia

Prof. GAUR was an active member in the Expert Committee for this project  and gave his  valuable expert suggestions.

It is one of the prominent works done in the field of Ayurveda in Sanskrit Language by NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INDIAN MEDICAL HARITAGE HYDERABAD.  The book has been published in Three different Volumes, with e-book facility.

It contains 3000 Ayurvedic Sanskrit words in a pre-determined specified format (Word, Gender, consummation of words, etymology of words, Etymological interpretation of words, Description, Synonyms, Translation of words in Hindi and English etc.)

Descriptive Catalogue

It has been published in Two Volumes by NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INDIAN MEDICAL HERITAGE HYDERABAD. It was a project called CDMM (Collection and Digitization of Medical Manuscript from South India, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh). It contains detailed description of the Ayurveda manuscripts and rarely available Ayurveda   books, which were written in Sanskrit and South Indian Languages.

Prof. Gaur was an active member in the Expert Committee for this project also and gave his valuable expert suggestions.

Exclusive contribution for Sanskrit

Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine native to the Indian subcontinent. The oldest known Ayurvedic texts are the Sushrutha Samhita and the Charaka Samhita. These Classical Ayurvedic texts are written in sanskrit language. So, it is quite essential for a person from Ayurveda field to have a command over Sanskrit Language.

Prof Gaur attained his primary and secondary education in Sanskrit and did Bhishagacharya from the sanskrit medium. Later being a lecturer in Ayurveda College he did MA in sanskrit from Rajasthan University in 1977 and secured first division. Meanwhile, he regularly taught all the subjects of basic principles which require good sanskrit knowledge as all the samhitas and commentaries are in sanskrit.

Prof. BanwariLal Gaur has written   31 Books  and almost each of them has their basics derived from Sanskrit Language.

Prof. Gaur has not just benefited Ayurveda but also contributed for Sanskrit. The below mentioned books are exclusively written by him which embarked his contribution in Sanskrit literature.

  • PadarthVigyanParichaya(This contains philosophy with Ayurvedic Context)
  • Samvartika Commentary on Sutrasthan of AstangHridaya(AstangHridaya is a book of the 6th Century in Sanskrit. The Sutra Sthan of this book is translated and a Commentary written by him in Hindi).
  • AYURVEDEEYA SHABDAAVABODH (It is a sanskrit literature book which contains
    Description and Derivation of Ayurvedic words, padasiddhi,chhandovarnan and examples of samas which has been used in Charaksamhita and Shushrutasamhita and Astanghridaya

  • Prof BanwariLal Gaur had occupied various academic positions. He started his career as Physician and climbed the ladders of academics - Demonstrator to Lecturer and Professor and to the position of  Director and finally to the highest academic seat of  Vice-Chancellor and always taught basic principles of ayurveda.
  1. While on being various positions, he had always engaged himself in teaching Samhitas, specially CharakSamhita and an Ayurveda DeepikaTika written in Sanskrit.

A major Project work was assigned to him by the Minstry of AYUSH of  Govt. of India  for translation of “CharakSamhita with Ayurveda Dipika Commentry” from Sanskrit into Hindi.   Prof. Gaur was its Chief Investigator and Translator.  It contains more than 4294 pages. This work also included description of Ayurvedic Terminological words in Sanskrit.

Speciality in Ayurveda  : Professor Gaur is an erudite Ayurveda scholar, renowned physician and a prolific writer who has served at various positions in his career spanning over 45 years.
